Fixe Le Kap triumphs at Newbury – Sporting Life
Trainer Nicky Henderson had won recent renewals of the contest with smart pair Grandouet and Top Notch and he looks to unearthed another potentially top class recruit.
Well backed throughout the morning, the French import was sent off the 6/5 favourite but was made to work hard to land the money.
Sent out in front by Jeremiah McGrath, the pair enjoyed an uncontested lead but were headed by hurdling newcomer Tommy Silver after the last
Fixe Le Kap’s experience told in the closing stages though as he rallied to deny Paul Nicholls’ charge by a length.
Kasakh Noir, who had been odds-on at the first show, made one or two slight mistakes and was soon in trouble after getting to within spitting distance of the first two home – to whom he was conceding 10lbs – between the last two flights.
Henderson said: « He’s not one of these flashy ones who goes around the yard saying, ‘I’m a superstar’ – he is a big, big baby.
« He loves jumping and I thought he might liven up on a racecourse and he did. He is quicker than he makes out and Jeremiah (McGrath) always said he was travelling well.
« He will be a really nice horse, but I’m not sure what to do in the short term. »
Betfred trimmed the winner into 14/1 from 25/1 for the JCB Triumph Hurdle, while Paddy Power went 16/1 from 25/1 for the same race at the Cheltenham Festival but Sky Bet were less impressed at 20/1.
Their Racing PR Manager Michael Shinners said: « Some smart horses have won this juvenile hurdle in recent years and Top Notch went on to finish second in last year’s JCB Triumph Hurdle for the same connections.
